Crying (inside) for the next 4 months

This week flew by incredibly fast.

thursday

Tuesday: Sweater – Halu Maybe from Yesstyle; pants – Uniqlo; shoes – Lems.  This sweater is the best winter sweater I own. I love it. When I spread out my arms I look like a giant bat. The hubs calls this my flying squirrel sweater. The turtleneck on it is massive. It’s so long that if I unfolded it all out it would engulf my whole head and flap over my entire face – it’s that big. There’s a tie string for the turtleneck, which is actually two layers. There’s a black layer and an inner grey layer so you can wear it either way. I usually wear the gray out and tuck the tie string under. It’s a cheap, fast fashion buy from one of those huge fast fashion websites and it’s one of the best purchases I’ve ever made. I live in this sweater in winter.

tuesday

Wednesday: Shirt – Yohji Yamamoto (Everlane long sleeve tee underneath for warmth); pants – Brass Clothing; shoes – Lems. This was not a good day. I was late to work due to a dramatic story revolving the alarm clock and the husband. As a result, I was thrown off all day and felt stressed out. At least I looked nice. I took this photo right when I walked in the door so I’m covering up my ID badge I hadn’t taken off my pants yet. Everyone has to wear an ID badge because it has a fob for door access to various parts of the building. Some people have more access than others, depending on department. I’ve never worked some place like this so it’s a bit weird. I’m always afraid I’ll forget my badge each day. I try to keep it in my purse when it’s not on me so I  know where it is.

wednesday

Thursday: Everlane mock neck shirt under an Everlane cotton sweater; pants – Uniqlo; shoes – Allbirds.  This sweater is a few years old and hasn’t really aged well. It’s comfortable, but it’s very flimsy and I feel like it looks too frumpy now. I bought a new Everlane cotton sweater and got it this week. It’s the mock neck cropped one. The cotton is much more substantial so hopefully it’ll last longer without looking bad. In general, I’m finding that Everlane clothes don’t hold up over time nearly as well as I thought they would.  The tees are ok, but the sweaters have been misses so far. The red lux one I wore twice last week got a hole in it so big I can’t wear it anymore. friday

Friday: Sweater – J Crew; jeans – Grana; shoes – Frye. I really like this sweater. It’s thick and comfortable. Since I cut all my hair off I’m constantly looking at turtleneck everything to keep my neck warm. I’m not a huge scarf person so turtlenecks are my only option.

vince

For the next 4 months (roughly) these Vince shoes will be the only ones I wear with any and every outfit. Why?

effing boot

Because this shit is happening again. After trying to wear the soft brace for several months I’ve come to realize it’s not going to work at all and I need to wear this damn immobilization boot again. I. HATE. IT. This will be round 3 in this annoying thing.

I’m not messing around anymore and dead serious on getting the tendonitis under control. Also, I still want to punch the doctor I spent near $200 on for visits half a year ago. “Oh, you’ll only need to wear it for 3 weeks and then taper off for the 4th”. MY FUCKING ASS! People who deal with tendonitis – if you go to a doctor, then double, no – TRIPLE the amount of time they tell you to wear an immobilization boot. It’s the strongest tendon in the body and it also takes the longest time to heal of any other tendon in the body.

I’ve read ALL the things about tendonitis I can find online and message boards and everyone says the same thing: most doctors underestimate the healing time. Also, most of them don’t give patients a good idea of how long to do recovery exercises (let alone what kinds they should be doing) BEFORE they can start their regular exercising again. This is how my condition became chronic and I’m sick of it. I was never given a proper gage for when I should do certain activities so I wouldn’t risk tearing the tendon again.

So outfits be fugly for the next 4 months because I’ll be wearing this boot, but whatever. I want to run again.

The time in between

Over the past month my birthday has come and gone, as has my second wedding anniversary to the husband. It’s been a mixed bag of fun, stressful, and strange lately.

The good: I have a new job. I start in a week, so I get another week of blissful nothingness on my calendar. No phone screenings, no interviews, no obsessively checking job listings anymore.

interview
Interview outfit: sweater and pants – Everlane. Shoes – Chinese Laundry. These are the only heeled shoes I have and I wore them at my wedding and any other formal event I need them for.

The bad (but not really bad): A month after I was laid off my husband’s company went *poof* and ended.  Basically, someone died or is near death and the family took control of the assets, said “hell no” to the company and now 40+ people lost their jobs, my husband included.

Married. Mortgage. Unemployed. That was our status for a solid 3 weeks together. Then I got a job offer and now the husband has two companies tripping over themselves to hire him, so we’re waiting to see what the offers are. Depending on what happens this week, we both might start our new jobs on the same day, which I find rather funny.

We’ve had great weather for being unemployed. It’s been like a little vacation, or what retirement would be like, but without the stress. The husband said he’d have to find more hobbies because he’s been going stir-crazy. We’ve gone hiking at parks, visited a zoo, had brunch in the middle of the week when it’s quiet and not too crowded and done things we’ve been wanting to do but never had the time for before.

I’ve also spent a ridiculous amount of time playing a new 3DS game the hubs gave me for my birthday. I get very OCD and this game sucked me in. I don’t even want to think about what the hour count would be (if there was one) for my sitting on the sofa playing this game, but I’m sure I’d be somewhat ashamed of it (or not because it’s just silly fun).

birthday
Lavender colored roses for my birthday. I’m not a fan of red roses. I prefer purple, orange or white. I’ve been lounging a lot on that sofa lately.

We’ve worked on indoor and outdoor projects – mostly spearheaded by me since I see this time as an opportunity to do work we normally would put off. We worked in the yard and I’ve devised a plan for dealing with the huge flower bed that serves as a weed pit right now in the backyard. I transplanted some ground cover ivy from a patch behind the garage. The idea is to let it spread throughout the flower bed area and crowd out the weeds. I also painted the powder room a medium grey and now I want to repaint the whole house in that color because it looks so cozy. We’ll be repainting the upstairs bathroom this week because it really needs it.

Some of our friends know we’re unemployed now and it’s been funny hearing their reactions. “Knew that racket couldn’t last forever… ” in reference to my ridiculous non-job where I was laid off. “What the hell, guys!” – regarding both of us being unemployed, “How did you manage that!” “You’re doing it all wrong. You need to spend more time doing nothing and then look for a job when you absolutely have to.” Most people found it incredible how I was paid so long for doing next to nothing. I know I had it easy too. It was literally a 3 year paid vacation. Now that I’ve got a real job lined up I’m hoping I’m up for the challenge and ready to get my brain functioning again. The hubs has been getting verbal jabs from all over. He’s never been unemployed since he was 14. This is a first for him and our friends keep telling him to take more time off.

The weather is supposed to get cold and rainy this week, so this mini vacation may come to a welcome ending point. Being cooped up in the house together without too much to do might drive us both insane. I’ll be fine, on the sofa playing my game. The problem is he’ll have cabin fever and then constantly come interrupt my game play because he needs attention – so both of us will end up annoyed.

anniversary
Checking out a new park on our anniversary. Shirt – Everlane. Pants – Brass Clothing. Shoes – Lems Nine2five.

Catching up

outfit

Top: Everlane. Pants: Uniqulo. House Slippers: Muji.

I wasn’t certain if I was going out this day or not. I think this was last Thursday. I ended up staying home and doing more cleaning. I’m wearing a new shirt here, the square mock neck from Everlane. The cotton is very soft and the shirt is rather cropped, but not too bad. I like how open the sleeves are. It’ll be a decent layering piece in cooler weather. I also got the slim long-sleeve crew in black, but probably won’t wear that for a while since the weather is getting hot again, but that’ll be another decent layering piece.

Most blogs I follow have been talking about the Everlane jeans and they were a complete non-event for me. The styles and colors were highly predictable and boring. I’m not in the market for fitted jeans like that anymore, so I’ve zero interest in them. Also, I’m not overly impressed with their new Goweave easy pant. Take a look at the photo above. The pants I’m wearing here look nearly identical to the ones Everlane just put out. These are from Uniqlo and they hardly wrinkle at all and were a third of the cost for the Everlane pant. I took this photo after I’d been running around the house, crawling on the floor to pick up things and they don’t look overly wrinkled at all. They also have a hidden elastic waist and faux zipper panel that looks a little more polished than the Everlane ones, IMO.

I get a strange feeling that Everlane is just churning out stuff to churn it out anymore and by doing so I feel like they are turning into a pseudo-fast-fashion type of place as a result. Their catalog has grown enormous over the past two years. They aren’t a bad company at all, but I feel like they’ve gotten a bit too big for their britches and are now trying to compete more with the fast fashion industry instead of stand above it. I’d prefer to buy stuff from them over most fast fashion places, but anymore I’m just not impressed by their predictable styles. I feel like I’m browsing a Banana Republic or J Crew catalog, but without as many patterns.

outfit2

Shirt and pants: Fantasy Linen. Shoes: Lems Nine2five. Hat: old – from a shop in the Ahwahnee Lodge in Yosemite Nat’l Park.

This was Saturday and the hubs and I went to a nearby Ren Faire. I was sweating up a storm and I was wearing light clothes. The people in period costumes with metal (the knights) and leathers must’ve been stifling! I’m glad I wore loose, airy clothes. We both got some sun. Mine turned more into a tan and the husband is now peeling because he burned a bit. Looking at this photo – I feel like I’m looking at someone about to go work in a rice paddy.

outfit3

Shirt: Banana Republic. Pants: Uniqlo. Shoes: Lems Nine2five.

I wore this to an interview. Risky I know because the shirt is sleeveless, but the office was connected to a warehouse. It’s hard to tell what’s ok with “business casual” though for offices. Some think business casual is actually a suit without the jacket and others allow jeans. The interview went very well though. It’s promising that I’m getting interviews so soon.

The weather is heating up again – ugh. I’m ready for real autumn weather. I was very disheartened to see it might creep up to 90F for my birthday next week. I hate hot weather.

Grunge

outfit

Tee: Grand Teton Nat’l Park. Flannel shirt: Uniqlo. Jeans: Grana. Shoes: Lems Nine2five.

I guess I was channeling my high school self with this sorta 90s grunge look. Two week old chipped nail varnish and all. I knew I was going to do a bit of much needed cleaning around the house, so I put on clothes I wouldn’t care if they got dirty or messed up.

While cleaning my new shoes arrived. I’d ordered Lems Nine2five shoes because while I like the Nisolo shoes, they aren’t going to cut it with my tendonitis. I may consider selling them. I did want to get a black casual oxford-ish shoe though and so I decided to try Lems.

925

I’d actually bought these shoes in one of the brown colors around a year ago, but returned them. I ordered them in the recommended size for my foot (I’m a size 8 so that meant I got a size 40 according to their chart), but they were way too big. I wear a size 40 in the Primal 2 and they fit perfectly, but with the Nine2five my heels were slipping out and the ends made me feel like I was wearing brown clown shoes. I looked at the site and 40 was the lowest size they had at the time, so just returned them. This time, I decided to go with black and they have sizes as low as 35 on the site now. I bought a 39 (which correlates to a size 7-7.5) and they fit great now. I don’t feel like I’ve got on clown shoes and my heels don’t slip out. I really don’t get Lems sizing at all. They say their charts are different for Nine2fives/ Boulder as compared to Primal 2, but when I look at the size I should be wearing – it’s the same size for all of them? I knew that wouldn’t work, so I’m glad I went with the size below. If anyone is interested, I’d recommend getting your normal shoe size (according to their chart) for Primal 2 and then size down one for the other (leather) kinds.

lems

One of the shoes (left) may look funny in the pics because I am wearing my ankle brace for my tendonitis. I deliberately got Lems because I knew I could wear them comfortably with my brace on. They leather is soft and the shoes easily allow for extra room all around. They do provide a little more structure and less ground feel than Primal 2. I wore them while cleaning most of the afternoon and can tell I’ll be wearing them a lot. No break in time needed. Also, the black ones I think look a bit better in person than they do on the site (there they look really boring). I think they will work well for office attire as well. The only con to them is the short shoe laces. The laces also look rather bad and I might try to find nicer looking ones. I think it would help them look a little more office appropriate with better laces as well.
