Hodgepodge

Friday

Friday: Everlane long sleeve, Fantasy Linen tunic, Grana jeans.  I had to wear green to work on Friday (I technically didn’t have to, but I figured I’d at least look like I cared even though I didn’t – it’s better than not attempting to be a “team player” at all…. right?)

It was so incredibly dark Friday morning. I was surprised Z didn’t get up to exercise. He grumbled and hid under the covers. Walking downstairs felt more like 4 am than 7:30 am. Why so dark? Oh right, massive rain storm the entire day. Although I left early, I was still late to work because no one was capable of driving without hitting something. So many accidents all over the place.  Everyone grumbled about the rain. At least it’s not snow. Considering the time of year, this downpour would’ve equaled almost 3 feet of snow. I’ll take the rain, thanks.

I left work late and a coworker for second shift asked people where they lived so he could tell them if their routes were flooded. He and I live in the same direction and he shook his head, “No good, road closed at the overpass due to flooding.” UGH! Then I remembered I had to go buy cat food anyway, so taking a detour didn’t sound so bad. That was before I ended up sitting at the same light for 10 solid minutes because 5 cop cars, one fire truck and two ambulance cars (all staggered over the 10 minutes and 6 light changes) made moving impossible. I got to the vet half an hour later (it normally takes 10 minutes max) and then choked when I saw the bill: $125 for a case of prescription wet food and 17 lb bag of prescription dry food. Well that’s a big expenditure I wasn’t expecting this month. I blame Bento for this. I love the stupid, demonic cat, but he’s got urine crystals so he must have prescription food. And because Yuki would end up stealing his food (since it’s better quality) we feed it to both of them.  I shake my fists at why pets are so expensive and then stop myself: well, last least we don’t have kids to worry about. Correction: our pets ARE our kids.

The rain starts up again. I finally get home and hobble out to the car twice because I can’t carry all the items (work bags and cat food) and keep my balance on this boot at the same time. Half a minute later Z shows up. It’s nearly 6 pm and he orders Indian for us (Thank you Uber Eats! We can now get our beloved Indian food whenever we want!). Meanwhile, we grab beer, he snaps my outfit photo as I’m taking off my security badge and we melt onto the sofa. It’s been a long, draining week for both of us. Post dinner down time: 4 hours of Zelda.

study
My desk where I’m currently writing. I’ve got several papers I need to sort. I just got a Jury Duty summons *head*desk*.

I’ve been thinking so much about saving money. The freshness of the new year and determination keep me going right now. The only expense I’ve had all week is that cat food, but I always put it in context of what’s spent out of the month. I don’t spend much money at all during the week, but end up doing “chunk” expenses all in one go at one point during the month – usually weekends towards the end. So the cat food was a “chunk” expense I wasn’t expecting so soon. I also noticed utilities were taken out this week and the electric/gas was pretty high. That was expected due to the holidays and company.

My end goal is for my credit card bill to only reflect necessities for at least one month. I’m trying to zero it out of discretionary expenses. Then I’ll be able to better budget out my discretionary expenses each month and not let it get out of hand. All bills are directly taken out of my bank account and it’s easy to track them since I get email notices every month. I’ll admit the cat food is a necessity, but it was one I hadn’t even considered before now and need to budget for. The dry food will last upwards of 9 months, but the wet we buy every month. So it needs to go into the monthly bills section.

doll
Huge doll on my sofa in my study. This was on my Amazon wishlist for so long I forgot about it and then was shocked to get it for Christmas this year from my MIL. Isn’t it cute? The little green/beige pillow is full of pine needles and smells like a tree.

I do have things I want. Items are in my Amazon wishlist for later. One will possibly be used for all outfit photos in the future. Not sure yet if I’ll do it, but the idea seems fun and a way to make the posts more entertaining – if only for myself. I’ll wait until I’m out of the boot before I get it. So I have something to look forward to and when that time comes around (2 months from now) if I still feel excited about it then I’ll purchase the item.

There’s also this site with all things gorgeous! Thanks to Talia I now have another site to obsessively swoon over and “window shop” (screen shop? is that better term for this?). I was good about only limiting myself to Totokaelo and Rosen (where I buy most of my Yohji stuff), but alas, now I have a new site love. Check the pretty:

blackblue
DYING! This outfit screams ME!
teal
Outfit color goals. Also, long cardigan goals. I love that teal color too.
whiteblack
Another straight up JEN OUTFIT. I could actually already pull this off with my Yohji pants, but I’d need a new top. I’m digging the gold shoes too.
silhouette
Silhouette goals. This is very Audrey Hepburn-ish I think. Not sure what I’d do about shoes though because I have hobbit toes and ballet flats really don’t work for me.
Enzo
Avant-garde pant love. These are hella expensive.

Catching up

outfit

Top: Everlane. Pants: Uniqulo. House Slippers: Muji.

I wasn’t certain if I was going out this day or not. I think this was last Thursday. I ended up staying home and doing more cleaning. I’m wearing a new shirt here, the square mock neck from Everlane. The cotton is very soft and the shirt is rather cropped, but not too bad. I like how open the sleeves are. It’ll be a decent layering piece in cooler weather. I also got the slim long-sleeve crew in black, but probably won’t wear that for a while since the weather is getting hot again, but that’ll be another decent layering piece.

Most blogs I follow have been talking about the Everlane jeans and they were a complete non-event for me. The styles and colors were highly predictable and boring. I’m not in the market for fitted jeans like that anymore, so I’ve zero interest in them. Also, I’m not overly impressed with their new Goweave easy pant. Take a look at the photo above. The pants I’m wearing here look nearly identical to the ones Everlane just put out. These are from Uniqlo and they hardly wrinkle at all and were a third of the cost for the Everlane pant. I took this photo after I’d been running around the house, crawling on the floor to pick up things and they don’t look overly wrinkled at all. They also have a hidden elastic waist and faux zipper panel that looks a little more polished than the Everlane ones, IMO.

I get a strange feeling that Everlane is just churning out stuff to churn it out anymore and by doing so I feel like they are turning into a pseudo-fast-fashion type of place as a result. Their catalog has grown enormous over the past two years. They aren’t a bad company at all, but I feel like they’ve gotten a bit too big for their britches and are now trying to compete more with the fast fashion industry instead of stand above it. I’d prefer to buy stuff from them over most fast fashion places, but anymore I’m just not impressed by their predictable styles. I feel like I’m browsing a Banana Republic or J Crew catalog, but without as many patterns.

Shirt and pants: Fantasy Linen. Shoes: Lems Nine2five. Hat: old – from a shop in the Ahwahnee Lodge in Yosemite Nat’l Park.

This was Saturday and the hubs and I went to a nearby Ren Faire. I was sweating up a storm and I was wearing light clothes. The people in period costumes with metal (the knights) and leathers must’ve been stifling! I’m glad I wore loose, airy clothes. We both got some sun. Mine turned more into a tan and the husband is now peeling because he burned a bit. Looking at this photo – I feel like I’m looking at someone about to go work in a rice paddy.

Shirt: Banana Republic. Pants: Uniqlo. Shoes: Lems Nine2five.

I wore this to an interview. Risky I know because the shirt is sleeveless, but the office was connected to a warehouse. It’s hard to tell what’s ok with “business casual” though for offices. Some think business casual is actually a suit without the jacket and others allow jeans. The interview went very well though. It’s promising that I’m getting interviews so soon.

The weather is heating up again – ugh. I’m ready for real autumn weather. I was very disheartened to see it might creep up to 90F for my birthday next week. I hate hot weather.

Things fall apart

Thursay

Last Thursday – Sweater: Everlane. Pants: Fantasy Linen. Shoes: Vivobarefoot Gobi.

Friday

Last Friday – Shirt: Yesstyle. Pants: Fantasy Linen. Jacket: Journal Standard. Shoes: Vivobarefoot Gobi.

Monday

Today – Shirt: Everlane. Pants: Grana. Shoes: Vivobarefoot Gobi. Purse: Coach.

Things have been an awkward mess lately and so am I.

Saturday the husband and I did some damage to the weed pit situation that is our flower beds. I took the electric hedge trimmers and gave the holly bushes out front a very bad buzz cut. I cut them back much lower than before, but that’s because I’m tired of them creeping up so much. I may work on removing them this week. The flower bed along the driveway was completely ripped up. Some of the plants we tore right out and others we trimmed back to tiny nubbins. It was nice getting a foot of space back on our already narrow driveway. The husband wants to tear out all the plants and put rocks down until we can afford to repave the whole driveway. It would be a lot of work, but at least we wouldn’t be fighting plants when we open the car doors next to the house.

Just now I heard a noise and our dumb cat, Bento, was so worked up from seeing a squirrel outside the window he body slammed into it and then bounced backwards. I saw him at the moment he wobbled to keep balance, but then fell on his butt down to the floor. He then jumped right back up on the window sill and is huffing and puffing, furious at the squirrel outside. He does this somewhat regularly. He forgets there’s a pane of glass in front of him and then slams himself into the window because his little kitty mind is too actively trying to chase the critters outside. I really wonder if he’s somehow given himself head damage from how many times he’s done that.

Long

Shirt: Fantasy Linen. Skirt and duster: Yesstyle. Shoes: TOMS.

This outfit make me look much longer than I am, but I’ll take it. The shirt is horribly wrinkled, but, you know – linen. That’s what happens when you wear it.

The weather is going to be gorgeous this weekend so the hubs and I plan to do yard work on Saturday and then a hiking trip with friends on Sunday.

I got a small brace for my ankle. It stabilizes the ankle, but does allow for some movement. So while it’s not as cumbersome as the “moon boot” I had on before (that’s what the hubs called it), I am still keeping it in place most of the time I wear it so my ankle has a little more time to heal. We’ll see how well this works out for a while.

Stripes

Shirt: yesstyle. Pants: Fantasy Linen. Shoes: Madden Girl.

Although it’s not overly visible (and not at all in photos) there is a very thin pinstripe in the linen pants. Technically I was wearing vertical and horizontal stripes today. I like some striped shirts, but I don’t have many.

Not much to say today other than it’s very hot outside, which is very boring. The office is still in kooky mode since we all voted to draw for the lottery. There were lots of ridiculous shenanigans in the online chat we use.

Shirt: Fantasy Linen. Skirt: Fabric Sense on Yesstyle. Slippers: Muji. Cardigan: Land’s End. When I went out I wore my black TOMS.

WFH day, but I did run a few errands for the office and stopped by in the morning.

It started out rainy and cloudy this morning, but now the sun is out – mostly. It’s extremely humid. These are the worst kinds of summer days. I wish it would’ve stayed drizzling rain all day instead. The humidity at the ends of these sorts of days is stifling. I used to live in a state where it was hot a lot. Autumn and winter were basically reduced to December and January and that was it. Now I live in an area where the seasons are definitely noticeable, but the summers here are brutal. It’s so ridiculously humid. Even after 15 years here I still can’t get used to them.

Mostly repeat

Shirt: Fantasy Linen. Jeans: Grana. Shoes: TOMS. Cardigan: Calo Rosa on Yesstyle.

Other than the jeans, I wore this exact same outfit on Monday. It’s that comfortable. I’m rather proud of how well I sewed up the arm holes so this shirt would fit better. They are technically a triangle piece inwards that meets with the original line of the shirt.

A Small Wardrobe had a great post today about dressing for your future self. I’ve been thinking about that a lot lately. What sort of clothing do I want to invest in? Since starting this blog and looking at my outfits, I realize there are several areas of my wardrobe I need to work out. I am starting to think in terms of what items would I spend the money on to keep for as long as humanly possible. Clothing with natural fibers would most likely last the longest. Also, I think the style of clothing I’m gravitating towards now will help in the longevity of my wardrobe as well. Close-fitted clothes get dirty quickly due to sweat and pit stains, especially in the summer. By wearing more clothes with natural fibers that have a looser fit I can wear them many more times before having to wash them. I think I’m finally on the track I want to be with what style and kind of clothing I want to invest in that’ll be with me in the future.

I’ve spent a lot of money on clothes this summer – there’s still many more items I’ve recently purchased on the way, but I have been considering the longevity of the clothes I’ve bought and their value to me. They are clothes I’m willing to put effort into keeping, instead of just discarding after a couple  years.

I overheard a couple guys in the office talking about clothing recently. One of them mentioned a brand that sells at Target and he seemed proud to say that the shirts from that brand lasted him at least 3 years. Somehow, that seems very short to me, but I can’t pinpoint to a lot in my wardrobe that’s even over 5 years old. Maybe I’ll go through the clothes I have to see which ones have lasted the longest and figure out why.

Wrinkled

outfit w- cardiganoutfit

Shirt + Pants: Fantasy Linen. Cardigan: Calo Rosa on Yesstyle. Shoes: TOMS.

I did steam these clothes to get out wrinkles last night, but after wearing them in the office throughout the day they ended up still quite wrinkled. But that’s the beauty of linen clothes. This is the big shirt I mentioned a while back I bought in the same order as the pants. The shirt I don’t think was made quite right because the arm holes were so big my elbows would get caught in them, so I sewed in the sides a little with my sewing machine. It’s still huge and it’s meant to be oversized, but I do still like it. I didn’t adjust it well for these photos. This outfit was like wearing the comfortable PJs in the office all day. It didn’t help that I hardly slept last night and had a hard time staying awake. Being this comfortable in an outfit was almost to my detriment.

I got lost down a rabbit hole of eBay finds today. I’d almost forgotten all about a Japanese brand that I fell in love with years ago and would follow all the time – but I never bought anything from them because they are so expensive. 45rpm had the most amazing lookbooks and I coveted most of what they had available, especially their denim and indigo dyed fabrics. Their ad campaigns now are rather generic and no longer show beautiful outdoor scenes with their clothes that I fawned over so much before, but the clothes are still quite beautiful. Anyway, I found some items on eBay through sellers for very reasonable prices. It’s very tempting to go hog-wild.

Achievement Unlock: Baggy Comfort

outfit

Shirt: Calo Rosa on Yesstyle. Pants: Fantasy Linen. House slippers: Muji.

I know I normally don’t post weekend outfits, but I felt like taking photos today.

Why did I ever obsess about wearing skinny jeans? I wore jeans once this week and I just wanted to go home and change. They are the comfortable Grana jeans, but now that I’m starting to embrace loose clothing I feel so much better and rarely want to put on jeans.

This top is fantastic and I love the texture. It’s also much warmer than I thought. Layered with a long sleeve tee or turtleneck underneath would make it perfectly suitable for cooler weather. I could even wear leggings underneath the pants and be fine for autumn.

My mood about my ankle has gotten better. Other than the lump that was created from wearing the Nisolo shoes earlier, I’ve not had any problems. In fact, even when I had the lump I didn’t have any major pain either, so maybe I need to give the tendon a little more time to strengthen.

I’ve been doing my usual weight training and actually started throwing weights on the barbell again. I had 40 lbs on the barbell for squats yesterday and ooof…. I am feeling it today. It’s been so long and that amount is so wimpy compared to where I was before! Baby steps…. I’m also taking regular walks around the neighborhood. After all the exercising, I spend more time now stretching, paying extra attention to my calf for tightness around the tendon.

I mentioned I’ve been craving ramen (not cup noodle, the real bone-broth stuff) and the best place to get it is in the city 40 minutes away. The hubs mentioned going to have some for dinner later today.

yuki

This is my perpetual battle in the house. Keeping this chair fur-free. Most of the time I fail because the cats both love this chair. They’ve claimed it as their own and Yuki, seen above, is usually in it 99% of the time. When Bento wants in the chair, he’ll pretend to attack people so they leave and he can get in it, because he’s an asshole that way. He usually only attacks the husband though because he’s a big softie.

Not quite reality

Shirt: J. Crew. Pants: Fantasy Linen. Shoes: Lems. Hoodie: Target.

I think these photos may be another case of looks-worse-than-it-actually-is outfit because based on the photos – this looks terrible. However, I was extremely comfortable and feel like the lighting or something isn’t doing the pants justice. Or maybe I really need to work on pairing these pants with a top that makes them look a little better. I know the shoes totally throw this off, but I already decided I would wear them today because of the lump I had on my ankle – even while wearing the Allbirds yesterday. I knew these Lems wouldn’t agitate the bump at all so they were going to be part of whatever outfit I threw on this morning. I will admit that I was in a terrible mood yesterday due to how much the Nisolo shoes bothered my ankle on Monday. It’s ridiculously frustrating when I spent so much time being incredibly careful with my ankle just to have all the healing basically destroyed again.
