Wool coat

yohji coat

Yohji Yamamoto wool coat

The one item from my recent TRR  shopping I kept is this coat. I’d gotten rid of my old black wool coat several years ago. It wasn’t until last year that I really missed having a heavy-but-not-snow-storm-worthy wool coat. The tailoring of this coat once again reminded me of why Yohji-sama is a master with design. Even though the double breasted front looks like I have all six buttons done up (or actually three to be buttoned), the coat curves in a slight way so that the bottom two buttons create an optical illusion. Only the top two (on the right in the photo) are actually buttoned. I freaking love this detail. I also love the cuffed sleeves that are stitched back. Plus, the back of the coat has a slit that goes up to my hips. This makes moving in this coat incredibly easy, especially getting in and out out of the car. The sides of the coat create protective panels when I walk as a result. I’m able to take wider steps and still be warm partially down my legs since the sides of the coat move more with me. I can button up the coat all the way to the top, but I don’t really need to. The back of the coat neck is designed in a way that gives me the neck protection I need and has a lift to it. The shoulders are a little tight, but that’s caused me to stand up straighter more than anything else. I’m not held down by it or feel uncomfortable, mostly because the back slit allows the coat to move up more if I’m seated. For as structured as this coat looks, it’s amazingly easy to move around in and I have a feeling that was the intent.

Ok, have I described enough how much of an engineering feat of incredible design this coat is now? Will. Keep. Forever.

Vince turtleneck – Banana Republic cardigan – Y’s pant – Jil Sander shoes

Ok, back to regular programming with the outfit I wore under the coat. I shocked the hell out of my boss today because I was wearing something with color. For some reason this very old and faded cardigan had just enough color to really pop out with this outfit and he kept talking about it. It’s kinda weird how he notes these things. I’m not sure how much of it is him judging me or if he’s really just weird like that.

Over cashmere

wool

Banana Republic cashmere sweater – Sacai Luck wool pant – Jil Sander shoes

Remember this pant from last winter? They are incredibly warm and I like how they are mostly lined (down to the knee). It’s time to break them out again.

I was gifted this sweater for Christmas and while it is nice, I’m really not a fan of cashmere in general. I don’t like fabric that’s fussy for washing. Even though 90% of my clothes should be dry cleaned, I throw them in the wash on delicate and hang or flat dry. I’ve always been able to make my clothes work out for me after washing, despite most of their finicky instructions and fabrics. However, cashmere never works out. I delicate wash cold, flat dry and it still shrivels on me and I have to stretch it out. The sleeves of this sweater are annoying now. They cling on to me and while I understand the style in general is meant to be form-fitting the sleeves are too tight. I hate seeing the elbow dimples on this sweater when I take it off.

I’m also very annoyed with how common cashmere sweaters are now. Everlane only seems to have cashmere or their “luxe wool” aka super thin merino that tears easily and also shrinks easily even with cold wash. When I look on TRR, it’s mostly cashmere as well. I can’t count how many times I’ve found a nice looking sweater but then wrinkled my nose and closed out the browsing window because I found out it’s cashmere. I much prefer wool blends.

Hitting the work self-destruct button

denim

Banana Republic top – Uniqlo pant – Frye Carly Chukkas – handmade (by me) lace scarf

Work has been utterly bat-shit insane lately. It’s all to do with a client that is not mine, but is affecting product for my clients, which is annoying to me. It’s been an all-hands-on-deck situation, but it really shouldn’t be considering how big our company is now. That is the part that pisses me off. Once smaller client derails everything when it should only be a tiny blip on the radar compared to the rest.

I’d like to say that is my work rant for the week, but I have a feeling another one is coming very soon.

Rückenfigur: A figure seen from behind used as a compositional device in art.

I was thinking today about how we always show the front of our outfits, but what about the back? Since most details for clothes tend to be on the front facing side of them, the back tends to be plain and unadorned and ignored. I noticed the back of my outfit in the bathroom at work and thought maybe something simple like this looks best.

Still sore, but not going to exercise today. I need to take a break. My legs almost gave out on me a few times in the office today.

Weekend staple

Thursday outfit and all the silly things I keep in my study: Everlane top, Won Hundred pant, Lems shoes.

thursday

Z took this photo and wanted to get Yuki in the shot. The photo shows more my collection of manga and animal crossing figurines than anything else.

Friday: Grana tank, Banana Republic denim shirt, Y’s pant, Adidas shoes.

friday

While I don’t always wear jeans on “casual Friday” or dress casually in the way many do for the office, I always make sure to wear comfy shoes whenever I can.

Sunday: Yosemite tee, Uniqlo linen pant.

post hike

This is a post-hike photo. Z wanted to go out to a park so we went to one of our stand-bys and it was crowded. However, we tend to meander off into the woods on the less taken trails – or rather trails that no one uses anymore and are so overgrown and full of mud no one in their right mind would bother hiking them anymore. Yep, that’s how we roll. We both came back with muddy shoes and pants.

Weekend usual: cotton top from Yesstyle and Ys pant.weekend

I wore this outfit all day Saturday and put it on again after I showered when we got home from our hike. Who knew lightweight wool pants would become my summer staple. I seriously love these and want to wear them all the time.

I’ve spent several hours catching up on Accidental Icon posts and finally remembered to add it in my regular blog list. I really like the weekend links she posts.  And I’ve decided I want everything from Margaret Howell’s Autumn ’18 collection.

Also, I made a very expensive shoe purchase and am anxiously awaiting my precious to arrive. Unlike clothes, I tend to have a longer running relationship with shoes. I wear them down and they have holes and stains and tears and all manner of scars on them by the time they are retired. The slippers in the above photo are a perfect example. There’s three holes in them right now but I can’t be bothered to buy new ones because I haven’t found any others I like yet. So when it comes to buying shoes, I don’t feel so bad splurging because if I like them enough I know they will be The Ones I wear until death. I’m still wearing the Lems shoes that are cracking because the leather is cheap. They are comfortable and an easy black shoe to wear so while they aren’t doing my outfits any favors I still wear them. Chalk it up to laziness in a way, but until I find the right replacements I keep almost hate-wearing my old shoes. I’m leaning more towards quality now in shoes versus easy wear, especially since I have an ankle condition to consider. I can wear my Frye shoes and they don’t bother my ankle at all so it is possible for me to wear good shoes that look nice and not be worried about my ankle getting all lumpy by the end of the day.

Half-moments

Friday: Banana Republic top, YY skirt, Frye shoes.

This weekend was one of those half-moments-of-zen where I was all wabi-sabi about my shoes and clothes. I know it won’t last, so I’m writing this down for posterity and to remind myself I need to do what I did this weekend more often.

I did a lot of laundry this weekend. I normally wear my clothes many times before washing them because I only wear them in the office or if I’m just hanging around the house. However, due to the hotter temps I’ve been sweating more so this weekend was a full-on laundry extravaganza. In the process of constantly washing, mending and ironing clothes I felt like I was in a bit of a trance. It was a peaceful one, definitely, but what really made me want to smack myself was: why don’t I give more care to my stuff like this regularly? For instance, the shoes I’m wearing in the above photos are horribly scuffed and water stained. Water. Stained. Leather. Shoes. Ugh.

I know I should’ve been taking better care of these shoes and even starting feeling very self conscious wearing them in the office due to how shoddy they were looking for the past month. Luckily, same-day delivery with amazon prime meant I got a shoe care kit and brushes pronto so my manic must-save-my-preciousssss mood could play itself out and I spent two hours today cleaning, conditioning, and polishing three pairs of leather shoes. I still may have some water stains on the shoes, but they will look a lot better than they used to. Also, considering I’m planning on buying several more pairs of shoes (mostly leather) I wanted to have a shoe care kit immediately anyway.

tops

I felt very satisfied seeing all of my tops ironed and organized, but I swear I developed a new form of profanity while trying to iron linen gauze. I know, I know it’s supposed to be wrinkled, but when the sleeves look like I wrung them dry and stay that way – it’s not a good office look.

bottoms

Part of the reason why I wore my YY skirt again on Friday was because I told myself I must wash my pants and when Friday morning rolled around I was panicking looking for my pants and then realized they were all crumpled in the laundry bin. ALL THE PANTS are clean and ironed now!

Because black

Monday

Monday: Rosen top, YY skirt/pants, Eileen Fisher slides.

The AC crapped out on the hottest day of the week. Luckily, I was still comfortable in my flowy linen top and skirt pants. It was very odd how the AC only stopped in some areas and I found out we have a lot of AC units. The front offices were hot, the post production area was frigid, the larger shop area was hot, but the smaller milling area was cold.

I also heard overheard this:

Coworker:  “I see everyone got the black memo today since we are all wearing it. I’m wearing black, and so are X, Y, and Z [coworkers]. Then there’s Jen, but she always wears black….”

I laughed a little at that and it made me all the more aware how comfortable I am wearing black in general. I seem to be accumulating more black items at an alarming rate as well.

tuesday

Banana Republic top, Pas de Calais pants, Frye shoes.

I wore a sleeveless top, thinking the AC might not be fixed, but it was, so I was frigid for the first half of the day. By late afternoon the AC was having trouble keeping up with the super humid weather outside and the temp started to creep up in the office.

I am still on the hunt for oxfords/brogues. Any recs? I still have the two I showed before on my list, but the Frye ones aren’t budget-friendly at the moment. I have check TRR and Poshmark, but not been impressed with the selection.

Chasing daylight

Limi Feu sweater, Banana Republic top, Rachel Comey pants. It was cold this morning, but my office area has been getting much warmer throughout the day so I took off the sweater for the later half. Yesterday I was roasting in the cashmere sweater in the afternoon with the sun on me.

I left the office at my normal time and managed to get OOTD photos done in some daylight.

Next week I might have jury duty. I’m hoping I won’t get selected because I’ve got too much to do at work already. My answers were always straight forward on the questionnaires for jury selection before, but now there is a difference. I was mugged a block away from my apartment when I lived in the city and the guy was never caught. It’s fairly typical in the city though. In fact, there’s a motto that there are those who have been mugged and those who have yet to be mugged. I lived there for 10 years and 4 fucking months before we moved out of the city I ended up being another of the city’s victims. The guy waited until I got in my car, stood over me and as I screamed he dove in the car, strangling me to shut up until he reached over and grabbed my handbag and ran. I was dazed and in a panic and some guy walking his dog down the street acted like he didn’t see anything although anyone with half a brain cell would notice how visibly shaken and upset I was. The cops weren’t helpful either because they didn’t drive me around the neighborhood like they are supposed to in an attempt to see if I recognized the guy. The detective I talked to looked dejected when he found out I wasn’t driven around – apparently it’s normal for the cops to not give a fuck because it happens so often. The policewoman who picked me up was actually quite the bitch to me, as if I was inconveniencing her.  I’ve had other bad experiences with sexist cops and cops using their status to try and intimidate me. When I called them out on it though they shut up and acted like nothing happened.

I know that not all cops are like that and in the city it can be tough, but in all honesty if they even pretended like they gave two shits they’d probably get a little more respect and help from the citizens in general.

I am glad I no longer live in the city, but I’m still really paranoid now about going out in some places because of what happened.

What day is it?

Monday

Banana Republic sweater, Sacai Luck pants.

I’m exhausted and slightly confused today. I hardly got any sleep because the Eagles won the Super Bowl (not that I give two fucks about it) and the fucking neighbors kept me up half the night setting off fireworks. I get it, they won. Big fucking deal now can these annoying twats stop and think for two seconds of the children and other adults who are being responsible and going to bed at a decent hour and would like to actually get rest before starting the work week? Ugh. I’m so glad we don’t live in the city anymore.

Today at work was… weird. A manager “retired” suddenly (awkward!) and another employee who was on leave decided not to come back (but I was prepared for that). I was so busy I was in a daze most of the time. The whole schedule for the current audit got thrown out of whack as well because, get this – they are adjusting the schedule around the fucking parade for the winning football team later this week.

What.

The.

Actual.

Fuck.

Of course I was in charge of making most of these changes, so adding that to my landslide of current work made for my being a greatly disgruntled employee today.

Z suggested I take the OOTD photo with the doll because he thought it was funny. He actually took the photo himself.

There were other things I wanted to say, but I’m so drained right now I can’t focus on anything so I’ll just throw in some photos I took over the weekend.

wafflebreakfast

Saturday breakfast. Z makes us waffles sometimes from scratch with a waffle iron he got when we moved into the house. The blueberry sauce is also homemade from blueberries we picked at a local orchard over the summer. We usually pick a gallon or so and then freeze a lot of them to have throughout the year.

dolldoll

Upper doll photo is from Saturday and the lower one was from a few weeks ago. I came home from work and found it like that at my desk.

All done with the nothing

drink

Tonight’s drink: Filibuster – rye whisky, lemon juice, maple syrup, egg white, black walnut bitters. It’s basically a whisky sour but with maple syrup instead of simple syrup. I subbed black walnut bitters for Angostura because I wanted something a bit drier.

Wednesday

Wednesday: 45rpm shirt, Yohji pants.

thursday

Thursday: Everlane sweater (over Everlane long sleeve), Rachel Comey pants. friday

Friday: Banana Republic top (J Crew tee underneath), Grana jeans.

Every day this week I’ve worn Girlfriend Collective leggings underneath all pants/jeans. It’s been cold.

Late Wednesday the Comptroller for the company asked me: “So, do you have the Business Development Budget 2017 form filled out? Um… the what what? So after some digging around looking for a file he told me to dig up on the network drive, there it is – the budget – that hasn’t been updated since July….

.

.

.

Fuck.

Yeah, so that’s not done. I had no clue I even needed to update it and apparently neither did the last two people who held this position before me! YAY, guess who gets the fucking annoying task of updating it all now when I have zero time to do my regular work to begin with because it’s the beginning of the month? Ugh. It’s ok. He’s giving me time to work on it, but I swear this has become the status quo lately. I finds out about x,y, and z things that apparently fall under my duties but NO ONE informed me of so I could keep track of it and build it into my schedule to work on. *head*desk* I’ve been trying to get it done, but of course several other larger and more pressing things needed to be done ASAP so it’s now getting bumped to next week. Depending on how Monday looks with my client reports I might be able to knock it out soon or I might be working some late nights.

So in other news… it’s February. *blink*

January flew by and was so busy I didn’t have much time to think of spending, but here’s some numbers:

Discretionary spending this month: $36.75 (1 affogato – $6.75 and two special event movie tickets for Mary and the Witch’s Flower- $30.00)

Unexpected charges that should generally be put into my budgeting, but I never think of until they happen: $31.79 – oil for oil change in my car (my husband actually does the oil change himself) and vet hospital: $125.44 – wet and dry prescription cat food (expensive little buggers!).

That’s it. All other shopping was groceries for meals we ate, which was $285. I buy groceries half the month and Z buys for the other half. We both alternate the smaller grocery runs for little pick up items after the two large grocery orders. I was thinking I’d be ok to buy a few things by February, but now I honestly can’t think of anything I need or want so I’ll wait and maybe see if I can get through February without spending much either. I’m curious what my expenses and credit card statement would look like after another month of very lean spending.

Z and I both lamented the horrible, busy week we’ve both had at our respective jobs. Hence my need for a cocktail and he immediately grabbed his favorite beer when we got home.  He told me throughout the day at his work, a video was constantly being played to cheer people up. This is an oldie and a total ear worm. You have been warned! If you don’t want ear worm do not watch I’m a Kitty Cat. (Or enjoy your ear worm and smile a lot.)
